A Reminder About Immunisation

Whooping cough notifications rose across the Bay of Plenty last year and 2017 saw small children admitted to hospital.

Toi Te Ora Public Health Service was notified of 95 people with whooping cough in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts in 2016, up from 34 in 2015. In 2016, 10 cases were babies aged one year or under (who are the most at risk of complications) and 11 were young children aged between one and four years.

Whooping cough is a highly infectious illness caused by bacteria that are spread through the community by coughing and sneezing, in the same way as colds and influenza. Protect your children from this distressing and serious disease with the Boostrix vaccination.

Girven Road Medical Centre encourages all patients to keep their, and their children’s, immunisations up-to-date. Please call and talk to the nurse if you have any queries about immunisation. To help protect your baby, ask your close family and friends to get vaccinated.

The Boostrix vaccination is free to pregnant women between 28 and 38 weeks gestation.
